When you are ready to buy a car, there are a number of things to think about.

STRONGLY ADVISABLE CHECKS  If you do not check the car out fully before you buy it, you may end up with a stolen car, which the police will take back and you will lose all of your money. Or you could buy a car that has finance owed on it and you would not own the car!

A hpi check will normally protect you against these situations, including cover for buying a “cloned” car.

For the cost or less than half a tank of petrol, you could put your mind at rest and avoid any nasty surprises!

Just click the link below to find out more.

MOT If the car is over 3 years old, it must have a current  MOT certificate, which is valid for one year from the date the MOT  was done, however, the MOT does not guarantee that a car is roadworthy. On the MOT, things like seatbelts, lights brakes and engine emissions should have been checked. £1000 fine if you do not have an MOT.

REGISTRATION DOCUMENT The car would need a V5 registration document, which goes with the car from new and states who owns the vehicle, but part of it is sent off when the car is sold. If you sell a car without sending the new keeper part off to the DVLA, then you will be liable for all the parking/speeding fines that the new keeper gets!

CAR ROAD TAX You will also need a current tax disc to be displayed on the left corner of the windscreen and lasts 6 or 12 months. You can also get a refund on the tax if you did not want to drive the car for a long time, but you have to declare the car as off the road and must be stored on private ground.

The rate of road  tax payable depends on the type of vehicle you are taxing and the amount of CO2 emissions it produces.

INSURANCE You are not legally allowed to drive any motor vehicle on a public road , without being insured specifically for YOU to drive it. You can be a named driver on the owners policy, or they may have any driver insurance. If you are not covered, you could be fined £5000, possible disqualification and 6 to 8 points on your licence.

If you have been driving less than 2 years, you will lose your licence, and have to do the tests again!
