Fill out the form  for some Top Tips on Passing

The UK car driving theory test.

You can apply for your Driving Theory  Test  online, by clicking here. Or you can download the form, Or book by telephone on  0300 200 1122

Although you have to pass your theory test before you can take your practical test, it's recommended that you start studying for your theory test, but don't actually take it until you have some practical experience of driving.

You will also have to pass the Hazard Perception Test at the same time as you do the Theory Test.

How the test works

The hazard perception part is delivered on a computer and you respond by clicking a button on the mouse. You will be presented with a series of 14 video clips which feature every day road scenes, in each clip there will be at least one developing hazard, but one of the clips will feature two developing hazards.

To achieve a high score you will need to respond to the developing hazard during the early part of its development. The maximum you can score on each hazard is five.

Recognition of available clues and perception of danger are skills that are necessary in all drivers and riders, irrespective of the vehicle used. For this reason, the same version of the hazard perception test is used for all categories of test.

An example of when to respond

As an example, if you are driving along a road and there are houses along it, you may have a pedestrian come out of their front door.

At this point you would click once to show that you have recognised that they are there (this is now a possible developing hazard).

(As a driver, you would normally be ready to come off the gas (accelerator) at this point and assess the situation).

When they open the front gate near the pavement, you would do a second click , because the possible hazard has developed further.

(As a driver, you would normally come off the gas (accelerator) and cover the brake at this point, as you are thinking they maybe going to cross the road).

If the pedestrian then gets closer to the road, you would give a third click .

(As a driver you would then assess how likely they are to cross, by trying to make eye contact. If you cannot make eye contact, they are more likely to cross, or if you are slowing down too much on approach they may think you are letting them cross. Be at a speed where you can stop if you need to.)

If the person now decides not to cross, you would not score any points as this was not the hazard, if they do cross, then you have scored a maximum 5 points for your first click when you first observed them.

You do not get any points for the later clicks, but if your first click was too early you will score maybe 3 points for the second click.

A Hazard Perception  explanatory DVD normally comes with the confirmation letter when you book the theory test. More in depth DVD`s can also be obtained at most larger newsagents and bookshops.

The Theory Test Centres are run by a third party company called Pearson VUE. Therefore the Theory Test Centres are normally separate from the Practical Test Centres.
