The DSA have now started testing pupils on "Independent driving" as part of the new practical driving test.

Your driving test will still last around 40 minutes and around 10 minutes of this time will consist of Independent driving.

Due to the increased time taken for the independent drivingpart of the test, the DSA are now only testing on one manoeuvre and maybe an emergency stop.
The Examiner will get you to stop at the side of the road and explain where they would like you to drive, either by following direction signs to a certain place, or following a series of normally three directions at a time.

Depending on the test route, they may also show you a diagram to show you where to go like this example.

You can ask for the Examiner to re-confirm the directions if you wish at any time.

Also see our driving test manoeuvre notes.
YOU WILL NOT NORMALLY FAIL FOR GOING IN THE WRONG DIRECTION, AS LONG AS YOU HAVE DEALT WITH THE SITUATION SAFELY.
You are being tested on your ability to drive independently and safely.
